Sr Engineer, Back End

Rose Digital is a Manhattan-based digital agency focused on helping market-leading brands build the future. Leading the way, we have used augmented reality to launch new product lines for Adidas, rebuilt Fuse from the ground up with Serverless/Next.js, and assisted a nonprofit start a movement to solve the opioid epidemic.  Although our business focus is on mobile and augmented reality experiences, our real passion is to build best in class digital products.

At Rose Digital we have a focus on creating functional mobile and web applications that leverage emerging technology. We are looking for engineers who are excited about the things that digital technology can create for people, that are active learners and always looking to discover and master the newest technologies, are excellent communicators to both technical and non-technical audiences, and are looking to work on a wide variety of projects. Engineers at Rose Digital are inherently cross-functional, having a depth of experience in one area but commonly work on teams with other engineers in areas outside of their core competency. While this position is for someone who is an experienced back-end (server-side) engineer, we are looking for people who are excited about opportunities to grow their skillset.

  • Primary responsibility is as a senior level individual contributor on projects, coding functional solutions for our clients and internal product initiatives, using a wide range of modern server-side technologies.
  • Responsible for the implementation of business logic, data storage, user management, and other aspects of functional application development that resides on the server.
  • As developers at Rose Digital are inherently cross-functional, may be responsible for working further into the front-end (mobile or web View layer) or collaborating with other more front-end leaning developers to integrate user-facing elements in developing end-to-end features.
  • Must deliver high quality work as the primary contributor, including the technical design and planning out the development work of complex features.
  • Serves as a technical resource and subject matter expert during the full software development life cycle – from initial concepting and technical design through implementation.
  • Create code that can be used as a model by other engineers on the team and in the organization. Assist and educate less experienced engineers as they are growing their skillsets.
  • Writing and maintaining project documentation – architecture and technical design docs, diagrams, specifications, tests, and other coded and written documentation.
  • Actively involved in the skill development of less-skilled members of the technical team; mentors, assists and educates junior engineers.
  • Comfortable working with existing / legacy applications, systems, data, and content (read: other people’s code) in order to leverage, adapt, or replace them with modern solutions.
  • Review and approve code / pull requests written by all levels across languages and areas of responsibility.
  • Communicate technical challenges and opportunities both internally to other members of the project team as well as with clients, with an ability to explain complex technical concepts to less technically adept audiences.
  • Ability to translate feature or functional requests from clients – often high-level, abstract, or focused on intended results – into actionable work for yourself and the team to work on.
  • Helping to contribute to the roadmap of projects with clients, breaking down larger feature requests into near-term aspects that will have larger impact as well as how that feature or functionality may evolve in subsequent releases.
  • Comfortable working with external data and content sources via APIs, often based on documentation and endpoint definitions and without additional 3rd Party support.
  • Often responsible for setting up cloud environments for both development and production. Should be familiar with effective source code branching models that allow for parallel feature development, multiple pre-production instances driven off of a CI/CD setup, and working with cloud-based infrastructure (most often AWS but occasionally Azure, Google Cloud, or others based on specific client needs).

  • Extensive and expert-level experience with JavaScript / TypeScript, specifically Node.js experience, and including 5+ years professional experience in software development.
  • At least 3 years working on an agile development team.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in designing, deploying, maintaining, and refining project architectural requirements.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment, either prior digital agency or startup experience, is preferred.
  • A successful candidate must be an engineer who is a flexible team player – willing and able to adapt to the specifics of the project and client need, the experience and skills of other team members, and ultimately able to ascertain what contribution they can make to the project to best fit the given need at the time.
  • Excellent communication skills are required – we ask our Engineers at Rose Digital to be able to be active in defining and updating requirements, clarifying specifics, participate in demos, and other activities that require an ability to communicate as well as code.
  • Related, a successful candidate must be able to communicate technical information clearly and articulately to both technical and non-technical / business users, internal (Rose team) and external (clients and involved 3rd Parties), in both verbal and written form.
  • Experience working with headless content management systems (CMSs) in order to organize and deliver content and data via APIs to applications.
  • Strong working and applied knowledge of cloud infrastructure is required and specifically solid AWS experience with S3, EC2, Lambda, CloudFront, DynamoDB, Cognito, and Amplify greatly preferred.
  • Experience with CI/CD development processes including tools like CircleCI, Chef, Jenkins, Amplify, Docker, Kubernetes, etc is also preferred.
  • Experience with leading modern front-end JavaScript based technologies / frameworks (e.g. - React or similar) for full-stack candidates.
  • Must be able to take larger tasks or features and break them down into their components – identify the best solution, account for any dependencies, and come up with the approach for building the feature through implementation and QA.
  • Must have consistent delivery and timely production-quality code conforming to general coding standards and best practices as well as specific client / project requirements.
  • Expert and intuitive problem-solving, debugging, and troubleshooting ability.
  • Demonstrated experience creating, deploying, maintaining, and refining project technical design and architectural requirements.
  • Experience with modern version control systems including log analysis, rebasing, patching, and hooks.
  • Comfortable using the command line as a part of local development, advanced shell scripting, system monitoring, and session management.
  • Able to work in a variety of IDEs in addition to text editors (including vi or emacs when needed).

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor required by law to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. Your answer will be maintained confidentially and not be seen by selecting officials or anyone else involved in making personnel decisions. Completing the form will not negatively impact you in any way, regardless of whether you have self-identified in the past.
